The Importance of Assistance at Age 5

The age of five is an extremely important developmental time. This time of a child’s life is one filled with new experiences. For many, they are entering a “normal” school setting for the first time. They are learning how to be away from the comfort of their parents, how to make friends, how to follow directions and instruction; the array of new emotional skills they learn is endless. They are also learning a lot of new physical skills. Some are major fundamental skills that they will continue to build upon like reading and writing, while others are a little simpler, perhaps learning to tie their shoes or to ride a bike. All these emotional and physical of milestones are essential for children this age. Even more essential is the support of the adults in their lives that make these new experiences possible. Whether it is their teachers at school or their parents at home, children at this age need the assistance of these adults to aid them in their new understanding of the world; without the support of those they trust most, development can not be as successful

  1. Thanks for sharing Payton. What cognitive skills allow 5 year olds to tie their shoes, ride a bike, and begin to learn how to read?
    Peace,
